Access Statement

Vulcan Lodge holiday cottages are accessed from a level slip road off the A470. There is a large level tarmac car park to the north and a large level gravel car park to the south. Guests may park within 10 metres of the access door of each cottage for unloading luggage.

There is a bus stop a 5 minute walk away with a shelter and seating and buses run from Rhayader to Llandrindod Wells every 2 hours during the day. Some buses can accommodate wheelchairs - please check in advance to be sure. Llandrindod Wells has a railway station which is 8 miles away. The Wye Valley Walk is a 10 minute walk away. Rhayader is 3.5 miles and the Elan Valley 6.5 miles.

There is a café, post office and shop next door with wheelchair access to the shop, post office and cafe. Both have toilets for the disabled. The cafe has a wide, handled door at the entrance and there are double automatic doors into the cafe which has a tiled floor and is all on one level. The shop is open from 6.00 am to 7.00 pm and the café from 8.00 am to 5.30 pm.

There are motion sensor lights on the outside of the lodge. Please remember to put them on when you go out in the day if you are unlikely to return until after dark. There is a torch in each cottage located in the cupboard under the sink. There is also a torch convenient to a bedroom for use in emergencies only. All floors in the cottages are of high quality wood laminate. All cottages have remote controlled televisions and DVD players. There is ample electric lighting to augment natural light in all rooms. Each cottage has gas fired central heating. Except for the wet rooms all showers have a 7" rim. Wall switches can be reached from a sitting position and all of the sinks have bar taps for ease of use. All internal doors are 32" wide. Kitchen surfaces are at standard height. The fridges, freezers, dishwashers ovens and hobs are all accessible from a seated position and there is a portable microwave available on request.




There is a level slabbed path from the car park. The entrance hall is L-shaped with a step up into the kitchen. The bedroom is accessed from the kitchen and has a step down into the en suite which has a shower, wash basin and toilet. The shower has a curtain. There is a glass door leading out onto the garden from the bedroom. This is an emergency exit and the key to the door is on a chain. There are 3 steps down to the lounge area with bannister rails and 2 steps up to the lounge's upper area which has a glass door leading out to the front of the cottage. There is a 3-seater Chesterfield settee and a recling easy chair. The 4-seater pine dining room table with 4 chairs is in the lounge area. There are no arms on the dining chairs. All rooms have natural light though the lounge is a little dark during the day due to the large stone fireplace. The sky tiles which have been fitted do a good job of augmenting the natural light during the day if needed. The Searle is not suitable for wheelchair users.





Entry is to the rear up a gently sloping decked ramp. There is an L-shaped hallway with a shower and toilet room. The shower has a glass door. Entry to the kitchen is level but to the bedrooms, lounge and further shower /toilet room there are 3 steps from the hallway. The kitchen has a large domed roof window. The double bedrooms have zip-linked beds, one 6' and one 5'. There is a separate shower room which has a glass door. The lounge has double French windows onto a decked balcony. The Faulkner is not suitable for wheelchair users.




THE MIDDLETON - specially equipped for guests with impairments.

This cottage is suitable for wheelchair users. There is easy access front and rear and a free flow through all of the rooms on this ground floor cottage. Access is available either from the front along a level slabbed path from the tarmac car park through double doors into the large front porch, then through further double doors into the sitting room. Access is also possible from the rear via a gently sloping wide decked ramp into a large, wide L-shaped hallway. There are chippings between the back gate and the start of the ramp: about 6 yards. The 2 sets of double doors at the front entrance are 63" and 58" wide. The rear entrance door is 35" wide.

There is a wet room off a hallway fitted with a left transfer toilet aid and bars in the shower with a curtain. One twin bedroom has en suite facilities with a double shower base and a shower curtain. A double bedroom has a built in wardrobe with a lowered clothes rail and the bed has a wooden base with room for a hoist. The third bedroom has a double bed with a walk-in dressing room and en suite facilities with a fire door. This door has a key on a chain. There is a glass door to this shower. The kitchen/dining area has two large domed ceiling windows augmented by electric lighting. The large lounge area has limited natural light but there is plenty of electric lighting. There is a raised easy chair in the open plan area.

The wet room is accessible by wheelchair. There are 2 grab rails in the shower and one by the wash basin. A toilet arm assists right transfer. The sink basin has no vanity unit beneath to assist persons in a wheelchair. All taps are lever taps.

All other doors are 32". Sockets are 17" from the floor and light switches 43" from the floor. The light switches also have colour contrast. There are 2 easy chairs which are 20" off the floor. Guests may request furniture to be rearranged if need be. Easy grip cutlery aids are available as are edge lined crockery. There is an outside light back and front and guests are advised to leave this on when they go out if they will not be coming back till after dark.

Wheelchair (not electric), commode, shower wheelchair, shower stool, shower wheelchair/commode combined, portable electric mobility scooter (for hire), cutlery aids, rimmed crockery, a potable buzzer and a walking frame.





On the first floor, this cottage is accessed from the front of the Lodge via a slabbed path from the tarmac car park. Stairs from the front porch lead up to the hallway. There is a step from the hall into the lounge with a low door - so watch your head. There is a through lounge/kitchen/dining area with two leather 2-seater sofas and wooden dining table and chairs. There are 3 windows in this lounge. The hallway leads to a bathroom with corner bath, shower and window. The shower has a curtain. There are 2 double bedrooms one with one window and one with 2 windows. Because the Woodman is on the first floor and there is no direct access to the garden, it is not suitable for small children or for guests with restricted mobility.





The Tudor is on the ground floor and except for the wet room all doors are standard size. The cottage is adjacent to the hard surface car park which gives close and easy access to the front door. The main front door is wide enough to take a standard wheelchair. Larger wheelchairs can enter through the other outside door as it is fractionally wider. This door leads directly into the bedroom.

There is an open plan sitting room/kitchen with a lot of space for turning wheelchairs. The kitchen units are at standard height. The sink, hob, oven, fridge and dishwasher are at a height which a wheelchair user may reach. The main microwave cannot be reached but a freestanding microwave is provided on request.

The bedroom is large . It has a wooden base double bed which will accommodate a hoist. There is also a settee which converts into a bed if needed for a carer or for couples who wish to sleep in separate beds.

The wet room is large with plenty of turning space and is equipped with disability aids. There are 2 toilet arms which provide for left and right transfer. The wash basin, mirror and shaving point are at a height suitable for use by wheelchair users.

Sky tiles have been fitted to give the maximum amount of light. There are also spot lights on the bedroom tables which assist reading. The kitchen has spot lights and under unti lights. There is an external light to give light to the car park on dark days.

DISABILITY AIDS Sockets and light switches are at an appropriate height for wheelchair users and colour contrasted. All taps have a lever. There are cutlery aids, a wheelchair, commode, wheelchair shower, wheelchair shower/commode combined, shower stool, walking frame, portable buzzer, outlined crockery, bright reading light and an electric motability scooter for hire at £5 a day.




This has a washing machine, tumble dryer, boot rack, coat rail for hanging wet outer clothing and a level access from the tarmac car park.


There is a south facing garden with outdoor seating which has level access for guests with limited mobility. The picnic bench will take a wheelchair. Access is via the slip road at the moment but we have asked the council to put in dropped curbs to the footpath. The garden is secured by fencing and gates.

There is another garden with picnic tables and benches to the south of the property which has 2 steps for access. One table is on grass and the other tables are on the chippings area. Fencing and gates secure this garden. Across the slip road is a large, level lawned area accessed via a small gate. There is no dropped curb. On this lawn are three picnic tables with benches and space for barbecues. The garden is shared with guests in the other cottages. However, there is sufficient garden furniture for all guests in all cottages. Only the Searle cottage has direct access to the garden which again is secured by fencing and gates.
